Special education

You are the parent of
a child with special needs...
Now what?

You are here

Right now you may be overwhelmed by emotions and confusing information

Having a better understanding of why you are here, what questions you should be asking, who you can talk to, and how you take the next steps, is the key to you taking control of the process. This special education intro can start you on your way!

How did you get here?

A school has recommended my child be evaluated for special education - how should I progress?

Understand why the school has initiated this conversation. What are the challenges your child is experiencing in the classroom?

Ask about interventions that are already in place to accomodate your child’s challenges. Obtain copies of any documents created by teachers or administrators regarding school issues. Ask what formal evaluations, screenings or tests the school is suggesting. Understand your rights as a parent in this process and voice your questions and concerns about your student’s educational needs.

We have received a diagnosis from a doctor - what do I do now?

Do you understand the diagnosis? Obtain a copy of the signed and dated diagnosis document from the doctor.

Take some time to understand and research the diagnosis. It is important to consider how this diagnosis may be impacting your child’s education. You might decide to speak with you child’s school about the diagnosis, and any further steps that needs to be taken. Make the proper accomodation in your child’s learning environment.

I think my child may have a learning challenge - how should I deal with this?

The first step is to have a discussion about your concerns with your child’s school.

Ask questions to understand the process the school follows in addressing suspected learning differences in students. You can also discuss your concerns with your child’s doctor. They may be able to provide insight into your child’s learning needs.

These are all the right questions to be asking yourself. The best way to progress is in small steps that you can digest. At the end of the day, we cannot all be experts in everything.
