Effective IEP Goals

How are effective IEP goals established?
And as a parent, how do you get involved as a positive influence on your child's goals?

How Can I Be Involved in Setting My Child's Goals?

Creating effective IEP goals for your child can greatly impact their educational progress and success. Your active involvement in their IEP Team at school is the best way for you to have a say in how goals are developed. In this article I am presenting some key tips and strategies for parents to consider.

Understand and Communicate Needs

I know I probably say this too often, but take the time to thoroughly understand your child’s strengths, weaknesses, and individual needs. This will help you identify specific areas where they require support or accommodations.

Then, prepare for how you want to communicate those needs to the IEP Team. Let them know that you know your child best, and that you want to make sure you transfer your knowledge to them effectively.

Collaborate

Although you know your child better than anyone else, school teachers and counsellors will also have had interaction with your child – listen to what they have to say.

Work closely with your child’s teachers, special education professionals, and IEP team. Collaborate with them to develop IEP goals that are realistic, measurable, and tailored to your child’s specific needs.

Set Effective Goals

To be effective, IEP goals should be specific, achievable, and measurable. They should focus on areas where your child needs improvement and provide a clear path for progress tracking. Consider short-term and long-term goals to ensure continuous growth.

Involve Your Child

If and when appropriate, involve your child in the IEP goal setting process. Including your child in the IEP goal-setting process can empower them and make them more invested in their own education. Encourage their participation, listen to their input, and take their preferences into account when creating goals. You may be surprised at how much they have actually thought about what “they wish they could do”.

Be Proactive

Stay involved in your child’s educational journey by regularly monitoring their progress and reviewing the IEP goals. If necessary, request additional meetings or modifications to ensure the goals remain relevant and effective.

Reinforce At Home

Reinforce the IEP goals at home by providing support and resources that complement what your child is learning in school. This can include additional practice, educational materials, or seeking additional support services.

Share information with the IEP team! Positive after school activities or reports from outside support services would be excellent information for the team to understand.

Celebrate Milestones!

Yet another piece of advice that I give often…

Recognize and celebrate your child’s achievements and milestones along the way. Positive reinforcement can boost their motivation, self-esteem, and commitment to achieving their IEP goals.

My Concluding Thoughts

Remember, every child is unique, and their IEP goals should reflect their individual needs and potential. By being proactive, collaborative, and supportive, you can help create effective IEP goals that set your child up for success in their educational journey.
